QUIN-WHY?: FONTAGRO

Independent Crisis Committee

In 2012, American TV Personality Oprah Winfrey impacted the Latin American agricultural industry forever by popularizing one food: quinoa. Quinoa, a protein and fiber packed grain indigenous to Peru, has been an integral part of South American culture for centuries. However, when quinoa began to gain popularity in American and European markets, Peruvian farmers were grossly overworked and underpaid for their labor – leading to corporate takeover of the quinoa industry. This had significant negative effects on public health in Peru, especially among children who no longer had access to the super-food that made up a significant portion of their diet. To prevent crises like this from happening again, FONTAGRO was formed. FONTAGRO’s primary purpose is to equip Latin American farmers with the technology, financial resources, and knowledge necessary to compete with corporations and protect culturally significant farming practices. In this committee, delegates will represent members from FONTAGRO’s board of directors–composed of great minds from 15 member nations–to protect small farmers and consumers from the ever expanding agriculture industry.
