THE UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC, AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATION

General Assembly | Preservation of World Heritage Sites | Double Delegate

In 1945, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded. Its main aim has been to advance peace and sustainable development through international collaboration in arts, science, culture, and education among member states. In 1972, the UNESCO Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage established that certain places on Earth are of 'outstanding universal value' and belong to the common heritage of mankind. From the city of Quito in Ecuador to Rapa Nui in Chile and Machu Picchu in Peru, there are 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean that contain over one hundred properties on this World Heritage List. Together with the other delegates in this committee, your job will be to help protect these sites from looting, illegal excavations, illicit trade of cultural property, and more, ensuring that these sites can be enjoyed by future generations and preserving important cultural heritage and history.
